The man and “El Torcal”

The presence of Man in El Torcal dates back to Prehistory, specifically the Middle Neolithic, finding archaeological sites in the Cueva del Toro. There are other sites that testify to the human presence in El Torcal VIII millennia A.C. Some of them are: La cueva de la Cuerda, the cave of Marinaleda, Sima del Hoyo … and others on the surface such as the Hoyo del Francés, Hoyo del Tambor or Fuente de la Higuera.

Likewise, more recent remains of Roman origin have been collected that point to the stone use of the geological resources of the place, using the limestones in the construction of villas near the Torcal: Anticaria, Osqua and Nescania.

El hombre en el Torcal

From the Romans to the Arabs, who did have a longer presence, proof of this was the watchtower that remained until the 70s in Sierra Chimenea, struck down by lightning.

The human presence in El Torcal remained almost permanently until the last century, when the last known town of El Torcal was abandoned and has been named as Las Sepulturas. The town consists of a set of small stone dwellings with sheepfolds and fields of cultivation although their main work was developed in the quarries.

After the abandonment of the town of Las Sepulturas, the only casual inhabitants of El Torcal were the shepherds, bandits and maquis (Civil War).
